Memory Foam or Pocket Sprung Mattress?
With so many options and variations out there, it isn’t always easy to know if you should buy a pocket sprung vs a memory foam mattress. Both have their pluses and their downfalls, so we created this guide to highlight where each type of mattress performs best. The differences between memory foam and pocket sprung mattresses are numerous, but they do have their similarities, so which is best for you?
Memory foam is a dense, man-made material that was developed for aeroplane seats and is now used in hospitals to provide spinal support and lessen bed sores for long-term patients. It is firm to the first touch but moulds to the shape of your body.
Some of the benefits of memory foam mattresses include:
• Long-lasting - they are very durable and often last two to four years longer than a spring mattress.
• Easy to care for – they usually only require turning every six months rather than flipping.
• Comfort – they are supportive and pressure relieving, which can lessen or alleviate back and joint pains when sleeping.
• Shock-absorbing – as you are well-cushioned by the mattress, if you share your bed, you are much less likely to feel the other person’s movement.
However, there are some downsides to these mattresses:
• Heat retention – as the mattress moulds to your body, it is more difficult for air to circulate so, if you run hot, it could become uncomfortable.
• Smell – memory foam can sometimes have a chemical smell when it’s new.
• Sinking – this is down to personal preference, but some people dislike the feeling of sinking into the mattress and being unable to move around as easily.
Pocket sprung mattresses are an enhanced form of spring mattress. Each spring is individually encased to allow them to move separately, and this means that they can feel smoother or more supportive. They are usually available with between 500-3000 springs; for better quality, you should aim for 1000 or more springs.
Pocket sprung mattresses have many positives, such as:
• Sitting higher – rather than sinking in, with a pocket sprung mattress you will lie on top of the mattress, and it can feel bouncier.
• Cool – as you are on top of the mattress, air can circulate around you more freely, which allows you to stay cooler as you sleep.
• Less motion transfer – if you share your bed, you are much less likely to feel the other person’s movement than you would be with an innerspring mattress, as the springs are individual and not connected.
• Support – pocket sprung mattresses were designed to provide targeted support for those with back pain or sore joints.
They do also have some less positive features:
• Pressure – as pocket sprung mattresses respond to the pressure of the body, parts of the body that lie heavier (such as the head, the chest and the hips) can be met with more pressure, and some people find this uncomfortable.
• Care – they require both flipping and rotating to extend their life, and this can be difficult as pocket sprung mattresses are often heavy.
• Materials – these mattresses often comprise more natural materials such as wool, and this can trigger allergies in some people.
Is Memory Foam Better Than Pocket Sprung?
In the end, it all depends on what you are looking for in a mattress. Some questions to ask yourself before you buy are:
• Do you have joint pain?
o Memory foam is usually considered the better option to support joint and back pain because it is denser and your weight is more evenly distributed.
• Do you move around a lot at night?
o Pocket sprung mattresses will be much more accommodating of movement throughout the night, whereas memory foam is more suited to moulding into one position.
• Do you share your bed?
o Generally, memory foam is better than pocket sprung for absorbing the movements of a partner, although the pocket sprung will also reduce the amount of movement you feel.
• Do you get warm when you sleep?
o Pocket sprung mattresses are superior in terms of air circulation, although some memory foam mattresses do now have the option of a cooling lining to stop you from overheating.
• What is your preference?
o When it comes to memory foam or pocket sprung, the choice of whether you prefer a firm bed that absorbs movement and moulds to your body or a springier, bouncier bed that lets you move around more easily is entirely personal – there is no right or wrong.
