As much as we love the glorious sunshine and warm weather that summer brings, falling asleep in the heat isn’t always easy. Good quality sleep is vital, so we’re bringing you our 20 best tips to stay cool at night.

1. Take a shower before bed

One of the best ways to stay cool at night is to take a shower just before bedtime. We also recommend wetting your hair as this will keep you even cooler as you fall asleep.  

2. Invest in light-weight bedding

To understand how to fall asleep in hot weather, you need to evaluate your bedding – it should be light in colour and made from a breathable fabric. Cotton is the ideal fabric for light-weight, breathable bed linens. And, lightly coloured fabrics (like white) won’t absorb as much heat throughout the day compared to darker fabrics. Crisp, white bedding is also a summer bedroom staple, and goes with everything!   

3. Wear breathable nightwear

When it comes to pyjamas, the best way to stay cool in bed is to wear thin, cotton nightwear. This type of fabric is breathable and won’t cling to your skin throughout the night, giving you a more comfortable night’s sleep.  

4. Switch to a Coolmax mattress

6. Drink cold water

Be sure to stay hydrated during the day for a better chance at a good night sleep. Drinking cold water will help you feel refreshed, so have a glass before you go to bed. Also, don’t forget to keep a bottle of ice-cold water by your bed in case you wake up throughout the night.

7. Wear chilled socks

Wearing socks to bed might sound counter-active, but your feet help to regulate your overall body temperature. So, pop some socks in your freezer and put them on before you go to sleep.

8. Avoid alcohol and caffeine

Alcohol and caffeine can dehydrate you and raise your blood pressure, causing your body temperature to rise. In turn, one of the best ways to stay cool at night is to limit your alcohol and caffeine intake during the day! Or, in the evening at least.  

9. Avoid heavy meals

For the best chance of staying cool in bed, avoid heavy meals close to bedtime. When you eat a dense meal, your body has to work hard to digest and metabolise that food which raises your core body temperature. Instead, have an early or light meal in the evening.


 

10. Keep the room ventilated

Our next tip for how to fall asleep in hot weather is to ensure your bedroom is as ventilated as possible. For starters, you should open your windows to allow cool air to flow into your bedroom. If you can, keep your bedroom door open too for maximum ventilation.

11. Close blinds or curtains throughout the day

Hopefully, if it’s warm and sunny in the day, you’ll be spending most of your time outdoors. So, you should be able to draw your bedroom blinds or curtains shut throughout the day. This is one of the handiest tips to stay cool at night as it will stop the sun shining directly into your bedroom and onto your bed. 

12. Use a fan and ice cubes

If you have an electric fan, you should take full advantage of it during the summer. Position the fan so it blows towards your bed, and place a bowl of ice cubes in front of it. Your fan will blow air over the ice cubes, cooling it down. In turn, you can enjoy the cool breeze as you drift off to sleep. 

13. Upgrade your mattress size

Sharing a bed with someone isn’t ideal during a heatwave because of that extra body temperature. However, for a lot of people, sharing a bed is unavoidable. 14. Keep long hair tied back

When it comes to long hair, the best way to stay cool in bed is to have it tied back! Keeping hair off of your neck and out of your face will help you feel more comfortable and refreshed.

15. Use a chilled or damp flannel

Using a flannel is one of the most effective ways to stay cool at night. Take a flannel and make it cold – whether that’s by putting it in the freezer or making it damp. Bring your chilled flannel to bed with you, and lay it on your forehead to stay cool and relaxed.

16. Sleep downstairs

Sometimes, the bedroom is just too warm to cope with, especially if you live any higher than the ground floor (heat does rise, after all). If you can, relocate to a room downstairs. This may require a night on the living room sofa, but sometimes it’s worth it!

17. Avoid exercise close to bedtime

Exercising is amazing for your health and wellbeing, but try to factor it early into your daily routine. After you work out, your core body temperature takes time to cool down, which can make you feel hotter than you need to be.


18. Chill your bedding

In the lead up before your bedtime, take your bedding, pop it in a plastic bag, and place it in the freezer. Ice-cold pillowcases and sheets will help keep your body temperature cool so you can fall asleep with ease.

19. Spray a fine, cool mist

One of our favourite tips to stay cool at night is to find a spray or mist bottle (perhaps one you use to water your plants) and fill it with ice-cold water. Before you hit the hay, spray the mist over your pillows and bedsheets. You can also spray it on yourself. This is a great way to feel cool and refreshed, and you can keep it by your bedside in case you wake up through the night.

20. Unplug your electrics

The electrical gadgets you have plugged in likely emit a small amount of heat. So, to keep your bedroom as cold as possible, it’s a great idea to unplug as many electricals as you can, such as lamps, computers or chargers. This is also environmentally and economically friendly – win, win, win!
