Difference between Double and Queen Bed

Difference between Double and Queen Bed

What is the difference between double and queen beds? This question is extremely common, and you’re not alone in feeling confused about it. So, in this article, we’re going to explain the difference between double beds and queen beds to help you choose which one is best for you and your bedroom.

Difference between Double and Queen Bed

     1. DIMENSIONS

The most important difference between double and queen beds are their different dimensions. Queen beds are slightly wider and longer than double beds, and therefore have a larger surface area, too.

As you can see, queen size beds are six inches wider than double beds, giving each sleeper an extra three inches of space. Queen size beds are also five inches longer than double beds, which is great for taller individuals. Unlike a double bed, a queen size bed has an extra centre leg underneath the frame to provide additional support.

    2. MATTRESSES & BEDDING

With its extra length and width, a queen size bed requires a larger mattress and bigger bedding compared to a double bed. In turn, you should expect to pay more for a queen size mattress and queen size bedding.

You should also keep an eye out for bedding that is described as ‘double / queen size’ as it may not fit a double or queen size bed very well. For extra precaution, measure out your mattress carefully to ensure a proper fit.

Double bed mattresses are the most commonly used in UK homes, so it should be easier to find more bedding options with a variety of colour palettes. Don’t be afraid to go all out when it comes to choosing bedding; it’s an excellent opportunity to really bring the style and aesthetic of any room together.

    3. SPACE

A queen size bed will take up more bedroom space than a double bed. As such, queen size beds can work well in larger, master bedrooms. However, if you’re struggling for floor space, a double bed still provides a comfortable night sleep for two sleepers.

Although a bigger bed may appear to fit in your space, make sure that it leaves enough floor space on both sides for you to get out of bed, move about the room easily and change your bedding smoothly. We recommend leaving at least one foot of space on both sides.

Just remember that the bed is the most important part of the bedroom! So, don’t be afraid to choose a bed that becomes the focus piece of furniture in your room.
