10 Signs You Need a New Mattress

A good-quality, comfortable mattress that meets our needs is an important investment – after all, conventional wisdom reminds us that we spend approximately a third of our lives sleeping. But, when are you supposed to change your mattress? You shouldn’t just rely on your mattress’s warranty to tell you how long it will last as many other variables can indicate it is time for a new mattress. If you’re not sure what you should be looking out for, carry on reading this article where we will highlight ten key signs that indicate when to get a new mattress.

Sign #1 – Your Mattress is Too Old

Once your mattress reaches seven years old, it is time to start thinking about replacing it. It is natural for mattresses to experience wear and tear over time considering you use it almost every single day. Your mattress may even have signs of wear that you can’t see. A worn-down mattress is not supportive, which can result in pain, aches, poor quality of sleep, tiredness and low mood. To keep track of when to change mattresses, write down the date you purchased your mattress on its’ label or its’ warranty.

Sign #2 – You’re Experiencing Allergies

Sneezing before bed and feeling bunged with watery eyes up first thing in the morning can be legitimate indicators of when to replace a mattress. This is because an older mattress is more likely to have accumulated an increasing number of allergens, dust mites or mildew. Being so small, this dust can be hard to see, so it is a sign that can be easily overlooked.

Sign #3 – You’re Waking Up with Aches and Pains

One of the most tell-tale signs of when to get a new mattress is if you are waking up in the morning with regular aches and pains, especially ones that fade away throughout the day. A good night sleep on a comfortable mattress should help your body to rest and recover from the stress it has endured throughout the day, not worsen it. So, if you're regularly stepping out of bed with a pain in your neck, back, lower back, hips or shoulders, then your mattress has probably worn out and is no longer relieving the pressure from your body or supporting you properly.

Sign #4 – You’re Sleeping Better Elsewhere

Are you noticing that anytime you sleep in a hotel or at a friend's house you're getting a better night sleep compared to when you are in your own bed? This may be an indicator of when to get a new mattress. It is more common for us to sleep worse when we're in different or unfamiliar surroundings, so if you're experiencing the opposite, it could be a sign that you need a new mattress.

Sign #5 – You’re Waking Up Feeling Tired

If you wake up and feel tired still, you probably haven't slept very well. Perhaps you were tossing and turning, and unable to truly get comfortable and relax. These are signs that your mattress has seen better days, and its comfort layers have probably worn out.

Sign #6 – Your Mattress is Sagging

A sagging mattress is an important sign that tells you when to change your mattress. Over time, the fibres that makeup mattresses will begin to compress, which can leave indents where you have slept. Almost every mattress material is capable of sagging. If you have a spring mattress, sagging can occur when the springs start to break down. Impressions that are 1.5 inches deep (or more) indicate that you need a mattress replacement. The deeper your mattress is sagging, the more uncomfortable and painful it is going to feel.

If you own a memory foam mattress, indents and impressions may not be as noticeable because memory foam is designed to conform to your body, but then bounce back to its original position. Also, memory foam mattresses tend to get softer with more use. So, if you own a memory foam mattress and the impressions are deeper than two inches, it has probably run its course.

Sign #7 – Your Mattress Has Lumps

A lumpy mattress is a clear-cut sign that you need to seek out a replacement. An old mattress, particular a lower-quality one, may develop lumps when the padding within it moves about over time. Consequently, your mattress will not be able to support your body properly as you sleep and can feel extremely uncomfortable. As such, you are likely to experience pain, stiffness and low energy levels.

Sign #8 – You’ve Experienced a Physical Change

Just as your mattress changes over time, so do you! As individuals, we can experience physical alterations and shifts in personal preferences as the years go by. For example, a significant change in body weight can influence what level of firmness your mattress should be. Heavier individuals tend to find firm mattresses more comfortable, and Airsprung mattresses are a great option. On the other hand, lighter individuals tend to find soft or medium mattresses, like Foam mattresses, more comfortable.

Sign #9 – You Have a Partner

If you start to share your bed with someone, you may need to consider replacing your mattress. When two people share one mattress, there is a greater load for the mattress to support, so a new mattress may be needed to provide a comfortable night sleep for both parties.

If your partner is disturbing your sleep with snoring or movement, you may want to invest in a different mattress material. Memory foam mattresses are an excellent choice if you face this problem because they have good motion isolation. This means you are less likely to feel your partner's movements throughout the night.

Also, if you haven't already, you may need to upgrade the size of your mattress to accommodate two people comfortably. Whether that's upgrading to double, king or super-king, your mattress needs to be roomy enough for the both of you.

Sign #10 – Your Mattress is Noisy

Is your mattress making squeaky noises while you try to get comfortable? If yes, this may be an indicator of when to change your mattress. Older mattresses that start sounding squeaky are likely to have coils which have aged and become weaker. As such, your mattress will probably be starting to sag, and a saggy mattress is not a supportive mattress!
